Bible sales soar despite Americans losing interest in religion

by Mitti Hicks

New data shows that while Americans are not fans of organized religion, they still love the Good Book.

In September, Bible sales were up 11% compared to 2024, and there are no signs of the interest slowing down. People have purchased more than 18 million Bibles so far this year, Religious News reports.

“Sales for Bibles have been steadily growing in the U.S. since 2021 and have set unprecedented annual sales records since 2022,” Brenna Connor, an industry analyst at Circana BookScan, told RNS.

Topping the list as the bestseller is a version of the English Standard Bible. Other top sellers include the Adventure Bible for kids and the She Reads Truth Bible. Sales were noticeably up after conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk was killed at a university over the summer. An estimated 2.4 million Bibles were sold in September 2025.

Publishers don’t have demographic details on the buyers, but as Premier Christian News previously reported, studies show that the younger generations and men are reading the Bible more after years of decline.

A Barna Group study shows that weekly Bible reading among U.S. adults climbed to 42 percent, up 12 points since a 15-year low in 2024.

“2025 is showing a major rebound of Bible reading, along with a surge in usage among younger generations,” said David Kinnaman, CEO of Barna Group. “This aligns with other signs of spiritual interests and reinforces the finding that Christian faith and practice are experiencing a reset moment.”

The popular YouVersion Bible App is also reporting a surge. The company just celebrated one billion Bible app downloads with 20 million purchases in the U.S. so far this year.

“We’re seeing incredible global momentum around Bible engagement, and it’s humbling to be part of what’s happening,” said Bobby Gruenewald, Founder and CEO of YouVersion.

Founded in 2008, YouVersion has grown to help people engage with the Bible in over 2,300 languages.

While more Americans are reportedly showing interest in the Bible, the latest study from Gallup found that less than half of Americans (49 percent) say religion is important in their lives, which continues a downward trend.
