Most people know Steph Curry as one of the greatest three-point shooters in NBA history. The four-time NBA champion is the first player in history to reach 4,000 career 3-pointers made.

Aside from his accolades on the basketball court, Curry is also known for his strong Christian faith, which he often cites as the driving force in his life and career. In a recent conversation with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, Curry spoke to the host about how his love for his favorite Bible verse, Philippians 4:13, was inspired by his mom at the start of his college basketball career.

The popular Bible verse states: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

“That’s my source of strength,  determination, and my purpose,” Curry said when asked what the verse means to him.

Curry said that when he was a freshman at Davidson College in North Carolina, his mom tested him before his first practice. She gave him words of encouragement and told him to choose a Bible verse to be his go-to in times of need or inspiration.

“I still write it on my shoes to this day. Every pair of shoes … it’s just a great reminder," Curry said.

Colbert chimed in and said he’s also a Christian after asking Curry if he thinks God picks winners in games.

“A lot of athletes who have deep faith sometimes will give their victories up to their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Colbert said. “Do you think God picks winners in games?”

“He might do a couple of parlays,” Curry responded jokingly.
