Bankers invited to Lambeth Palace to pray and learn ethics

Justin Welby wants ambitious people to spend time at Lambeth Palace helping the poor and growing closer to God before entering work in the City.

The archbishop said their natural ambition would help them take up the offer, but he didn't reveal full details of the plan.

A corner of Lambeth Palace is to be set aside for bankers between 20 and 35 years of age, he said.

The initiative aims to prevent another global recession by teaching the bankers of tomorrow to be more ethical and not to take huge risks at the expense of the poor.

Rt Rev Justin Welby said his plan would rebuild trust in banking.

He said: "Failure to change the culture of leadership in the next five years, to a degree that is unimaginable today let alone in 2008, will lead to very serious consequences for the financial services industry in terms of over-heavy regulation and yet more decades of lack of trust.

"A year of really deep reflection on self, on motivation, on the nature of theological anthropology, commitment to the common good and what that means, and service with the poor, is absolutely life-shaping."
