Bad Bunny has private meeting with Pope Leo

by Anna Rees Green

The Pope has met privately with Latin rap singer Bad Bunny, during his six-day tour of Spain.

The Vatican said it would not release any images of the meeting between the pontiff and the regaeton star, whose latest Grammy-winning album is ironically titled  Debí Tirar Más Fotos (I Should Have Taken More Pictures).

The Holy See said that Bad Bunny's family, who have a Catholic faith, were also at the meeting in Madrid.

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, served as an altar boy during his younger years, but has not claimed any religion in adulthood.

Both men were holding large gatherings in the city - the pope was holding an address for young people, whilst Bad Bunny was on tour.

“If [youth] are confronted with the question: do they want to see Bad Bunny or do they want to see the pope, I think many will go to see Bad Bunny,” the pontiff joked to CNN. “But I think there will also be a few there to see the pope. And that too says something, you know.”

The two share a critic: the President of the United States. Earlier this year, Donald Trump alleged that the pope was "weak on crime".

In February, Bad Bunny headlined the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show in NFL history, incorporating the Spanish language into his performance. Trump dismissed it as "absolutely terrible" and "an affront to the Greatness of America".

During the performance, Bad Bunny shouted "God bless America", before listing every country in Central and South America, alongside Canada and the United States.

"Together," he cried, "we are America!"
