Archbishop of Baltimore says Church must restore peace

by Hannah Tooley

The Tablet reported that the Archbishop has been praying to solve the systematic issues that are thought to have caused the unrest.

25-year-old Freddie Gray died in police custody on April 19th, a week after he had been arrested on a weapons charge and sustained a severe spinal cord injury.

Following his funeral a peaceful protest became violent and cars were set alight and shops looted.

The Archbishop said during the unrest he called as many West Baltimore pastors as he could: "We will continue to do a lot of work, especially through Bishop Madden and the city pastors, especially on the west side."

He added when touring the West Baltimore neighbourhoods affected there were adults and children with brooms clearing up the mess from the night before.

He said: "First of all, let's pray. ... We need to strengthen our communities that they might be a force of peace.

"We need to participate vigorously in a citywide dialogue on the systemic issues that have really bubbled up to the surface here.

"It seems that's our role in this."

Yesterday schools in the area closed across the city.
