The Archbishop of York, Most Rev Stephen Cottrell has added his name to a campaign to halt the government’s plans to privatise Channel 4.
Also signed up to the Channel 4 Ain't Broke campaign is the Bishop of Leeds and the Bishop of Ripon.
They’ve united with 27 production companies and more celebrities to call for a rethink over plans to sell the TV channel.
They claim that the channel is profitable as it is and any sale could lead to the closure of up to 60 small businesses and many jobs.
Speaking about the campaign, Bishop of Leeds, Rt Rev Nick Baines, said: “The plan to sell off Channel 4 is ideologically driven and therefore short-sighted and wrong.
“Channel 4 is the levelling up broadcaster, it’s good for our region. It ain’t broke - so the government shouldn’t be trying to fix it.”
The Government has rejected the concerns claiming the sale of Channel 4 will allow for more investment.
