Pope Leo XIV outlined the mission of his papacy, highlighting artificial intelligence (AI) as the greatest challenge to humanity at present.
Addressing the cardinals who elected him, Leo – born Robert Prevost – said part of the reason behind his papal name was a desire to champion social justice, amidst advancing capitalism. Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903) advocated for fair pay and treatment of workers during the Industrial Revolution.
He said: "AI poses new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour."
Outlining the mission of his papacy, he honoured the "precious legacy" of Pope Francis in making the Church more accessible for the modern world, with "complete dedication to service".
The pontiff emphasised his commitment to "dialogue with the contemporary world", including supporting services in local languages as well as Latin.
In a break from tradition, he then opened the floor to questions from cardinals, allowing them to voice concerns about the Church.
Spanish Cardinal Aquilino Bocos Merino said the two-hour meeting was "very cordial and communal".
Irish Cardinal Sean Brady told Reuters that Leo "listened very carefully".
"He knows he's going to have to make the decisions," he said, "but we're here to help him."
