5 accused of killing a Christian acquitted in Nigeria

In June a 74-year-old street vendor, Bridget Patience Agbahime, was beaten to death by a Muslim mob after a man said she had insulted the prophet Muhammad.

A witness and those who knew the Christian victim said she had not insulted Islam.

Five people were arrested in connection with her murder and all five suspects were acquitted.

Nigeria's population is a mix of Muslims and Christians.

According to the World Factbook by CIA around 50 per cent of Nigeria's population is Muslim, 40 per cent Christian and 10 per cent practice local religions.

Nigeria ranks at number twelve on the Open Doors World Watch List, documenting persecution against Christians around the world.

According to Agenzia Fides the murder was condemned by the largest Islamic Association of Nigeria, the Jama'atu Nasril Islam.

It said: "These terrible incidents are to be condemned and are to be seen as criminal acts, perpetrated by criminals."
