Justin Welby receives honorary degree from Aberdeen Uni

by Heather Preston

The Archbishop of Canterbury was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Aberdeen on Tuesday.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby received a Doctorate in Divinity in recognition of his “contribution to faith and society" during a special ceremony in King's College Chapel.

He was commended for his peace-making efforts and contributions to a more diverse church leadership.

The University of Aberdeen is the third oldest university in Scotland and renowned for its study of theology and divinity, which it has undertaken since its founding in 1495.

Latest data from the Research Excellence Framework ranked Aberdeen’s Theology and Religious Studies as top in the UK.

Professor Sir Iain Torrance, Pro-Chancellor of the University, said: “Within the life of the church, Archbishop Welby has strived to maintain unity within a global ecclesial community which has at times been very divided. His work in peacebuilding, reconciliation and forgiveness has been honest and powerful. Furthermore, under his Archepiscopal tenure, women have for the first time been able to be consecrated bishops—in no small part due to his guidance and vision.

“For these and his many other contributions to the ministry of the church, to public theology, and to service of our nation, we are delighted to award him the degree of Doctor of Divinity.”

The archbishop said receiving the degree was a "great gift".
