'The church is the hope of the world': Honduras pastor tackles plastic pollution

by Lydia Davies

In El Rincón, Honduras, Pastor Wilfredo Vásquez has spearheaded an environmental initiative in response to the community's struggle with plastic pollution.

He told Christianity Today: "More and more, I understand that if we want to see changes in any area of society, we as children of God must take the initiative for those changes because the church is the hope of the world."

Vásquez's efforts have led to significant improvements in his community's waste management. He explained the dire state prior to these changes: "What people do with solid waste is either they throw it, they bury it, or they burn it."

Miriam Moreno of Tearfund praised Vásquez's leadership and commitment in an interview with the news outlet: “It’s very inspiring to have leaders like him to be able to share his experience and what he’s done.

"I think it’s my responsibility as a Christian...to mobilise others and to get to know what others are doing."

Rich Gower of Tearfund went onto highlight the broader implications of plastic pollution on impoverished communities, saying: “The results are wide-ranging and extremely harmful." He underscored the urgency of a comprehensive plastics treaty that addresses the needs of those most affected by waste.
