Young Muslim pupils outshine Christians

According to the Department for Education figures, they are less likely to reach the expected grade in reading during their SATS at the end of Year 2.

Among Muslim and Jewish school children, 85 per cent and 83 per cent will attain the expected result in the Key Stage 1 reading test, respectively.

In contrasts, the figure for youngsters at Church of England and Catholic schools is 78 per cent. It's still higher than the 76 per cent figure for non-religious schools.

Nick Gibb, the school standards minister was quoted by The Times as saying: "Thanks to the hard work of teachers and this government's continued focus on raising standards and increased emphasis on phonics, six years are reading better than ever before."

The number of Muslim and Jewish schools whose results were included in the figures was relatively low; eleven Muslim and 35 Jewish schools.

The statistics are suggest that free schools performed better than other types of schools, such as local authority schools or academies.
