World's first MA in Digital Theology being offered at Durham University

by Eno Adeogun

Peter Phillips, Director of CODEC research tells Premier some of the degree's aims: "We're trying to look at how digital culture and theology can be brought together hand-in-hand and reflect upon each other. Digital culture is absolutely crucial in our contemporary society - it is a digital culture- everything about it.

"We are trying to say what role does theology play in forming digital culture - in enabling digital culture - but also in kind of protecting us against that digital culture. How do human beings flourish within digital culture?"

Cranmer Hall, which states on it's website that it seeks to "engage with God - and serve the Church and the world" already offers four other postgraduate courses.

It is a part of St John's College, founded a little over 100 years ago to provide a place for evangelical Anglicans to train for ordained ministry in the context of Durham University.

Phillips said the evangelical foundation is looking for scholarship funds to "enable as many people as possible to get onto the course" and added that there a few small bursaries already available "especially for those involved in ministry".

Professor David Wilkinson, Professor of Theology, Principal of St John's College, Durham University, said: "CODEC is unique in combining research on the digital environment within a world class University with practical outputs to serve the Church.

"In a culture which is increasingly on-line it is the one place in the world which has an international reputation, academic depth and close partnerships with various churches and Christian organisations."

The course will welcome its first intake of students in September 2017.
