Westminster Abbey to allow visitors in for free following Queen's funeral

by Kelly Valencia

Those wishing to visit Westminster Abbey, the location of the State Funeral for Her Majesty the Queen, can do so for free on Thursday 22nd September.

The abbey's usual £25 entry fee has been scrapped throughout Wednesday and Thursday to allow visitors the opportunity of "private prayer and reflection".

At least 2,000 people attended the Queen's funeral on Monday, including 100 heads of state and many who were recognised in The Queen's Birthday Honours earlier this year for their work during the pandemic.

Although people won't be able to fully tour the abbey, they will be allowed to see some of the main areas used during the Queen's funeral.

Esteban Celis, 25, from Guatemala, visited on Wednesday morning.

He told PA: "Casually I booked a vacation to London like three, four months ago, I didn't know that all of this was going to happen.

"I feel like I am a part of history now and I want to see where the Queen was. Now I have a lot of interest in the UK's history.

"I really didn't know this was going to happen. But for me, it was very interesting to see how Londoners and how all the people love so much the Queen. So it's been an incredible experience."

Guided tours will not be on offer.

The abbey will resume its normal visiting hours and prices on Friday.
