The bishops of the Church in Wales have told the LGBT+ community they will work to amend the draft “to reflect more adequately our understanding of their equal place in the Church”.

It’s as a draft of one of the Calls to be debated during the Lambeth Conference has sparked criticism among some of those in attendance.

The Call on human dignity is asking bishops and church leaders from the Anglican Communion to issue a non-binding vote on whether to reaffirm or commit to further consideration of Resolution 1.10 from 1998.

The Resolution rejects homosexuality as “incompatible with Scripture,” commits to “listen to the experience of homosexual persons” and wishes “to assure them that they are loved by God and that all baptised, believing and faithful persons, regardless of sexual orientation, are full members of the Body of Christ”.

But for many, the Call is “hateful” and ignores the Living in Love and Faith process.

The Church in Wales’ bishops believe that it “undermines and subverts” LGBT+ people”.

In a statement, they said: “We have noticed a short text, inserted in the draft Lambeth Call on Human Dignity, which undermines and subverts the dignity of an integral part of our community, rather than affirming them.

“Recognising that some provinces will want to affirm the historic understanding of marriage, we wish to assure our LGBT+ sisters and brothers in Christ that we will work to amend this passage to reflect more adequately our understanding of their equal place in the Church,” it reads.

Speaking ahead of the Conference, Most Rev Justin Welby explained the calls had been drafted by “a diverse group of Anglicans — male and female, lay and ordained, from different generations and from every part of the Communion”.

“They are one part of a process that began before this part of the Conference, and will continue long after it formally finishes, as every Province discerns its own response to the Calls in their own contexts,” he added.
