Website ranks churches based on acceptance of LGBT members

by Eno Adeogun

Church Clarity, which launched earlier this month, analyses different policies and stated inclusivity of parishes nationwide, based on what's available on their website as, "ambiguity is harmful and clarity is reasonable".

Explaining the "problem"to be fixed, the site states: "There are millions of churches around the world. They represent a wide spectrum of beliefs, which are translated into actively enforced policies.

"At the level of the local church, policies are often communicated unclearly, if they are disclosed at all. In many churches, especially evangelical ones, clarity is elusive."

The leadership team, which is made up of a former executive pastor of an evangelical mega church, a deacon and marketing and communications consultant, also call on people to submit churches to be considered.

However, Church Clarity's website states it is not calling on these churches to change their policies.

In an interview with Vice, Tim Schraeder who spent more than 15 years working in marketing and communications for churches before leading the company, explained how they score churches.

He said: "We curated the first batch of churches, but we've had almost 700 scored since we launched last week. All our scores are based on what's easily and publicly accessible on a church's website.

"Most parishes recognize that people looking for a faith community will go to their website, so they'll usually lay out nicely what can be expected there."

He also had a message for LGBTQ individuals trying to reconcile both their faith and sexuality.

He said: "I would hope that they can see that in Christ, they can be a whole person and that those things don't have to be segmented. There's a seat for them at the table, and they deserve a place in a church community as much as anybody else.

"We hope that we can point them in the right direction."
