Vicar's wife jailed for stealing from disabled pensioner

Ann Smale from Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire used cash machines to withdraw money from the accounts of 80-year-old Shirley Spiess between April 2014 and November 2015.

The 43-year-old, who is married to the Reverend Simon Smale from Fylingdales and Hawsker parish, was employed to provide Shirley Spiess with daily home care.

Smale was arrested in November last year and confessed to stealing after a care company noticed unauthorised cash withdrawals from the victim's bank account and alerted police.

She also pleaded guilty to a further fraud and a second theft offence.

York Crown Court heard Ann Smale had a previous conviction for theft and attempted fraud in 1999 for trying to cash a cheque which had been forged.
