Vicar of Baghdad staying away from Iraq

He is currently in Jerusalem and says that if he goes back home he could be targeted by extremists.

In a Facebook post, he said: "Sadly things are not looking good for an immanent (sic) return to Baghdad.

"My dear friend the Archbishop of Canterbury has made clear that my profile is so high, I am British and very pro Israel which would place me at incredibly high risk should ISIL get near Baghdad.

"At the moment they are not but who knows what could happen. This will mean that I will not be able to return to Baghdad yet."

Last we week he spoke to Premier's News Hour from Baghdad and expressed concern for the capital city: "These people are coming towards us.

"We need people on the ground who can protect us and there's nobody."

He also said ISmilitants were just 2km outside Baghdad.

Over the past six months the extremists have taken over numerous cities in Iraq, telling Christians and other minorities to pay a tax, convert to Islam or be killed.

Canon Andrew did reveal on the News Hour that he may return to other parts of Iraq in the near future.
