The crib and spruce tree, 25 metres high and 19 metres wide, planned for St Peter's Square will feature a Luzzu model, a traditional Maltese fishing boat.
According to Vatican Radio, the vessel "not only represents tradition: fish and life but also, unfortunately, the realities of migrants who in these same waters cross the sea on makeshift boats to Italy."
The tree is being sourced from Trentino in northern Italy, while the giant Nativity scene - designed by artist Manwel Grech - will include 17 statues dressed in traditional Maltese attire.
Pope Francis will attend the Christian light switch-on ceremony on 9th December 2016 and the tree will remain in St Peter's Square until the feast of the Lord's Baptism on 8th January.
