Christians in India are facing a surge in hostility, with at least two attacks reported every day this year, according to a Christian advocacy group.

Between January and May alone, 313 incidents were recorded via a toll-free helpline run by the United Christian Forum (UCF), an inter-denominational body based in New Delhi.

The organisation claimed the figures reflect a worrying rise in anti-Christian violence, with 834 incidents logged in 2024, up from 734 in 2023 and 601 in 2022, according to UCA News.

“These include viral hate, brutal mob violence and rampant social ostracisation,” said UCF’s national convenor, A.C. Michael, who pointed to Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as hotspots.

Twelve Indian states currently enforce laws restricting religious conversions, which critics say are being misused to target Christians.

Uttar Pradesh-based activist Minakshi Singh said: “A large number of these attacks are based on baseless accusations of forced conversions.

"No government has been able to provide documentary evidence.”

UCF has called for urgent government action and greater protections for Christian minorities as violence continues to escalate.

India is currently ranked 11th on the 2025 World Watch List by Open Doors, placing it among the countries where Christians face very high to extreme levels of persecution.
