Twitter turns 10: Church of England calls it "really useful tool"

by Aaron James

As well as regularly tweeting as a denomination and individual clergy, the Church of England has also collected the stories of Anglicans across Britain and shared them via the @ourcofe handle, to show that the Christian life is not just on a Sunday but a daily occurrence.

Twitter facts:

Launched: March 21 2006

CEO's net worth: $2.3 billion

Most followed man: Justin Bieber 77.5m

Most followed woman: Katy Perry 84.8m

Twitter users 'tweet' their thoughts using no more than 140 characters and 'follow' people of interest to see what they're tweeting.

Around 332 million people use Twitter every month, making it one of the most used social media websites in the world.

Despite its popularity Twitter has never made a profit.

The company has bought several others, floated itself publicly on Wall Street in 2013 and introduced advertising in order to make itself more competitive, but has still struggled against competitors such as Instagram and Facebook.

Shares in the company are now at an all-time low.

Tallie Proud, who leads the Church of England's social media campaigns, told Premier's News Hour: "It's been incredible important. We've just found it a really useful tool.

"It is a great way [for churches] to reach into their community, a lot of people follow their local churches on Twitter just to see what they're up to.

"Use of social media, the use of Twitter and Periscope, is a way of reaching people that would never have normally have heard of your church, and I think that's just a fantastic opportunity that churches can't pass up."
