‘His faith never waned’: Tribute paid to Eddie Stobart, founder and devout Christian

by Heather Preston

Keith Danby, chairman of Safe Families for Children and Premier’s business development director, has paid tribute to Eddie Stobart, the founder of one of Britain’s most iconic lorry firms, following his recent death.

Eddie Stobart, known for his visionary work in haulage, agriculture, and the construction of the M6 motorway, passed away in his 90s. Stobart leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond his business empire, reflecting his deep Christian faith and commitment to spreading the gospel.

“His very core was to see people come to faith,” said Danby, a close friend. “Everybody knew he was a Christian man of God as well as a businessman.”

Born into a farming family with devout Methodist roots, Danby explains that Stobart’s faith shaped his life and work: “He was a committed member of Gideons International, while his wife, Nora, served as a One-Time Lady President.”

Beyond his business achievements, Stobart built Lowmoor Evangelical Church in Wigton, Carlisle, and brought the Christian book distributor Send the Light (STL) to the region, ensuring that Bibles and Christian literature reached people around the world.

“He lived into his 90s. His faith never waned. There were some challenging times, some difficult times with the business, but it was a constant,” Danby added.

Eddie Stobart is survived by his daughter Anne and his son William, while his late son Edward, who died in 2011, helped turn the business into the global company it is known as today.
