Tom Holland has been inaugurated into a new role at Durham Cathedral, helping to share the works of an influential monk known as the ‘Father of English History’.

The popular historian has taken on the honorary position as the first Bede Librarian, to promote the Cathedral’s archives and collections about the Venerable Bede.

As one of the most well-known writers of the Early Middle Ages, Bede chronicled the growth of the church in Ecclesiastical History of the English People, published in the seventh century. He is buried at the Cathedral.

“It is a great privilege for me to become the first Bede Librarian of Durham Cathedral. The inauguration service was one I will never forget”, Holland said, speaking after a choral evensong on Monday.

“I have loved reconnecting with this special place and its story and sharing what makes Bede and Cuthbert truly inspirational saints”, the historian added.

Holland is particularly known for his book Dominion, about the influence of Christianity on morality, as well as co-hosting The Rest is History podcast.

After the inauguration, Holland gave a talk titled ‘Cuthbert, Bede and the Renewal of Culture’, hosted by the Dean for the Durham Cathedral Institute.

Very Rev Dr Philip Plyming said the Cathedral team was “thrilled” the historian has joined, and was “excited at the contribution he will make”.

“Bede continues to inspire us here in Durham, and has much to say to this generation seeking meaning, hope and truth.  His witness to Jesus Christ is one that speaks down the ages, and it was wonderful to hear Tom communicate so brilliantly on Cuthbert and Bede and their significance today”, the Dean added.
