Yesterday MPs passed legislation to make it legal for so called three parent babies.
It means part of a donor woman's DNA would be inserted into the birth mother's egg in a bid to avoid lethal genetic disorders being passed on.
The technique is called Mitochondrial Donation.
In a free vote, the Commons vote 382 for and 127 against. The bill still needs to be passed by the House of Lords before it becomes law.
Bishop John Keenan, the Bishop of Paisley, described it as an issue that 'should concern us all'.
He said: "They destroy human life, since in order to construct a disease free embryo, two healthy ones will have to be destroyed.
"The technique is not a treatment, it does not cure anyone or anything, rather it seeks to remove anyone affected by certain conditions from the human gene pool.
"Destroying those who have a particular disease and presenting it as a cure or as progress is utterly disingenuous and completely unethical.
"Mitochondrial Donation completely destroys and distorts the natural process of fertility.
"It is surprising that a society which increasingly favours and supports natural and "environmentally friendly" products and services should countenance the genetic modification of human beings.
"How can we object when scientists genetically modify plants but not when they do the same with people?"
But the Prime Minister David Cameron said scientists were not 'playing God' as he defended the bill.
He told LBC radio: "As someone who has had the experience of having a severely disabled child I have every sympathy with those parents.
"This is something that can be done and something that I think from all the research and evidence it is not playing God with nature this is much more like a kidney donation or a lung donation rather than some sort of fundamental change that is being made.
"Those arguing for the change pointing out that this is not an absolutely fundamental issue of designer babies it's about dealing with a problem."
