‘The unity of God’s church is powerful’: Christians urged to take action on anniversary of George Floyd killing

by Marcus Jones

Christians across the UK are being encouraged to light a candle of justice next week to mark the one year anniversary of the killing of George Floyd.

Churches Together in England wants believers to pray and commit to taking personal and institutional action to tackle racism in our society and our churches.

George Floyd died on 25th May last year after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.

Chauvin was found guilty of murder earlier this year.

Floyd’s death led to global protests on the issue of race and police brutality.

The global church has too looked at its role in racism across the world over the past year.

Calling for action Rev Dr Lurliene Miller, co-chair of the Churches Together in England (CTE) Racial Justice Working Group and vice-chair of CTE’s Trustees said: “The unity of God’s church is powerful, and we’re so encouraged to see churches committing to working together to tackle racial injustice.

“I’d encourage Christians and churches up and down the country to get involved, lighting their candle and praying the #CandleOfJustice prayer at noon on Tuesday 25 May.”

Individuals can take part in the campaign in the following ways:

1. At noon, pause for one minute to remember George Floyd and all those who experience racism
2. Light your candle* (or shine a light from your phone)
3. Pray using the #CandleOfJustice prayer
4. Pause, reflect and make a personal commitment to tackling racial injustice
5. Share on social media – upload your candle photo or share the Candle of Justice prayer graphic (use the hashtag #CandleOfJustice and tag in @ChurchesEngland)

Churches Together in Britain and Ireland is hosting an online national service of reflection to mark the anniversary later in the day.
