The church leaders and clergy on the New Years Honours List

Several church leaders have been named in the 2023 New Year honours list; the first under the reign of King Charles III.

The awards range from financial services to community work during the pandemic.

Here are the awardees named on the list: 

Bishop Dr Derek Anthony Webley

Bishop Dr Derek has been recognised for his work as co-chair of the Windrush Cross Government Working Group. 

For services to the Windrush Generation in Birmingham and the West Midlands, he has been awarded an OBE. 

He is a Minister of Religion for the New Testament Church of God, having acted previously as the National Director of Evangelism, then National Director of Youth and Christian Education and the District Bishop for Birmingham/Solihull.

For services to the community in Arundel, West Sussex, particularly during Covid-19, Rev Canon David Alan Twinley has been made a medallist of the Order of the British Empire. 

During the pandemic, Rev Twinley’s church organised phone calls for lonely members of the community, as well as rallying volunteers to shop for the elderly or vulnerable, and pick up medications for those unable to leave their homes. 

He has been a vicar at Arundel and Rector of South Stoke since 2016.

He is also a canon of Chichester Cathedral.


Rev Innocent Nathan Kiyaga

For services to the community in Devon and Cornwall, Rev Innocent Nathan Kiyaga has been made a medallist of the Order of the British Empire. 

He is the Area Dean of the Church of England in Torbay and school chaplain at St Cuthbert Mayne School. 

 

Rev Matthew Henry Hagan

Chaplain at the Southern Area Hospice and Rector of Tynan, Aghavilly and Middletown Parishes in County Armagh, Rev Hagan has been given an MBE for services to hospice healthcare and to the community of Northern Ireland. 

 

Rev Peter Duncan King TD 

For services to the Church and to the community in South London (London, Greater London), Rev Peter Duncan King TD has been made a medallist of the Order of the British Empire. 

 

Rev. Canon John Hartley Tattersall


For services to the financial sector in Greater London, Rev. Canon John Hartley Tattersall has been awarded a CBE.

 

Rev Dr Margaret Jane Joachim


Chair of the English Candidates’ Committee, under the Liberal Democrats, Rev Dr Margaret Jane Jaochim has been awarded an MBE for her services to women in politics.
