Two lifelong atheists converted to Christianity after watching The Chosen, according to actor Jonathan Roumie, who said viewers are often moved by the show’s portrayal of Jesus.
Roumie, who played Jesus in the faith-based drama, told The View that the first episode “grabs hold of you,” adding that “if God wants to, He will find you.”
The actor said his own relationship with Christ shaped the authenticity of his performance.
He explained that what he brought to the role was “my relationship to Christ… and my love for Him,” telling the program it had “made me a better person” and made him “want to love people.”
Speaking to co-host Sunny Hostin, he described how he occasionally looked through direct messages on Instagram and found two people who “had been lifelong atheists and never had any interest in God.”
He said both were sent the show by someone they knew and became drawn in, later reading the Bible, attending church, and eventually converting to Christianity. He called their experience “remarkable.”
Roumie also spoke about the difficulty of filming the sixth season of The Chosen, which depicts the crucifixion.
He said: “I think as an actor, you’re always looking for truth in a character, and to be able to find that and to play a character authentically, you have to enter into whatever that character’s truth is in the story.”
When talking about Jesus, he said, “it becomes doubly intense because I’m now trying to enter into the truth of what it meant to go through torture and crucifixion.”
Roumie said he asked God to give him “some sense” of what it would be like, adding: “He didn’t disappoint.”
The sixth season of The Chosen is set to premiere in 2026.
