The streaming series The Chosen, which explores the life of Jesus and his disciples, has broken its own Guinness World Record for being the most widely-translated series of all time.
The Gospel-inspired show is now available in 125 languages. For comparison, Netflix offers its programmes in 45 languages.
It is the second time The Chosen has smashed the linguistic barrier, having reached 86 translations in September 2025.
In 2023, the organisation Come and See acquired intellectual property rights to The Chosen. Their mission is to eventually make it available in over 600 languages.
"The appeal of The Chosen really comes down to the way the story is being told," said Come and See's chief growth officer, Mark McKane. "It's being told with compassion, and in a way that we can relate to, with natural human flaws, struggles and behaviours. The disciples were humans, just like we are, and Jesus came to actually help them through their struggles. He said: 'Follow me.' "
Translating the programme takes on an extra level of significance compared with typical entertainment translations, as it involves interpreting the word of God. Come and See have developed a "double layer" of theological analysis to ensure translations reflect the biblical meaning of Jesus' words.
"It is a lot of work," Dr Wendy Lorde, vice president of content localisation, told Premier Christian News. "Like any other Hollywood show, our studios and translation teams take a first pass at the script. But from there, we are very, very different. We then have a pastor or theologian review the translation to ensure that it is faithful to the Bible. Then the actors go into the studio, record it, and once again, it goes through a second theological review, just in case anyone went off script."
"Our focus is to make sure that it's very faithful to the actual story," she emphasised.
Come and See said the show's translations have made it a vital "outreach tool."
"We had a ministry team recently helping build wells in Tanzania," said Mark McKane. "They built a relationship with the Maasai tribe, and they were able to build this well, and then bring in The Chosen episode where the Samaritan woman meets Jesus at the well. This tribe didn't know the gospel, but got experience it through The Chosen."
"Being able to see the gospel acted out in the language you speak and dream in, it's more impactful than a subtitle," Dr Lorde added. "It makes a real difference."
