Tearfund urges UK government help poorer countries as COP27 kicks off

by Sophie Drew

The COP27 conference has begun in Egypt, as world leaders gather in an attempt to turn the tide on climate change.

Rishi Sunak will be addressing the conference after a U-turn decision.

The Prime Minister was initially going to stay in the UK in order to focus on domestic matters. He has since changed his mind.

On the floor of the conference, Sunak will urge world leaders to go "further and faster" in moving away from fossil fuels.

He’s pledged to turn the UK into a "clean energy superpower".

However, Christian charity Tearfund is pressing the PM to go one step further by financially supporting poorer countries, many of whom are already on the frontline of climate change.

Laura Young, from the charity, said: “The UK has a big part to play in this.

Financially, we can support a lot of other countries and initiatives with climate finance.

“We're one of the big players on the global stage, and also, historically, we've got a history of building up our country on the back of fossil fuels.

“So it's good for us to be thinking about the ways that we can support that.

“There was $100 billion a year, pledged over a decade ago and we have never managed to make that money up.

“Now more than ever, it feels like we're seeing more climate news, every time we turn on the telly every time we listen to the radio. So it's important that we get that finance now.”
