Tearfund hands out heaters as freezing temperatures and blizzards hit refugees

by Antony Bushfield

Jordan has been hit by a massive snow storm which has left many refugee homes in the country damp and wet.

Freezing temperatures are also causing problems for the hundreds of thousands of people forced to flee to the country by the Syrian civil war.

"This is a miserable time of year for the millions of refugees across the region, having to cope with freezing temperatures, rain and snow on top of all their other problems," said Thomas Stocker, Tearfund's Middle East Response Partners Manager.

"We're relieved that we were able to equip these vulnerable families before the weather turned."

Tearfund said it had been working through its church-based partners in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq to issue food supplies, cash assistance, education, water and sanitation and trauma care.

On Monday heavy snow and rain and winds of up to 60 miles per hour hit the country.

Temperatures have been on or around freezing for several days.
