Former Spice Girl, Mel C brought a world-class performance to a Cheshire church on Monday night as part of the launch for her new album Sweat.

The artist whose real name is Melanie Chisolm performed to a crowd of 350 people at St Mary’s in Nantwich town.

Rev Mark Hart from the church revealed that it was surprising to discover that Melanie C was going to perform there.

"They booked the dates, and said there was someone coming but they couldn't say who just yet, so we held off and waited," Hart told BBC News.

The medieval church has hosted its own regular concerts with Rev Hart saying, “the acoustics, the aesthetic of the building... the lighting”, all contribute to experience for audience members.

The organisers of the event have staged shows at the church before; however, they have said that this one was particularly special.

“Having grown up in the 90s and loving pop music, it's really special to put this one on," Dani Cook, from the independent record shop Applestump told the broadcaster.

Cook explained that fans came from all over, which made the buzz around the gig brilliant.

With the gig selling out in just “nine minutes”, she said that the day felt “very unusual and surreal”.
