'Speeding' Nottingham motorcyclist in fatal crash was 'late for church'

An inquest heard how Pawel Luba was driving up to double the 30mph speed limit along the city's Gregory Boulevard on 19th February 2017 when his bike collided with a car which was pulling into the road.

Coroner Mairin Casey concluded that "excessive speed" was the primary factor which contributed to the 35-year-old's death. There is no suggestion the driver of the car was at fault.

Mr Luba's 24-year-old sister Paulina told the Nottingham Post: "He was only driving like that because he was late for church, which is just around the corner from the accident.

"He liked the priest and did not want to miss the service."

His fiancé Maria Thompson, 40, was quoted by the newspaper as saying: "That speed was not normal for him. He was obsessed with motorcycles but was very careful.

"He was quite religious and did not like to miss services."

A police road collision expert told the inquest that Mr Luba overtook a van shortly before the collision which ended his life, meaning he would not have seen the car pulling out.
