The Vatican has decided to introduce new LED lights to illuminate Michelangelo's masterpieces.
The Renaissance pieces relied on the Italian sunshine until the 1980s, when it was discovered that they were being damaged by the rays and the windows were closed up.
Low-level lighting was installed instead, which failed to show the true beauty of the artwork.
Officials at the Vatican will now place 7,000 LED lights around the chapel to bathe the room in light, making it easier to see the paintings.
According to The Independent, Peter Laier, spokesman for German firm Osram, which is supplying the system, said the amount of light in the chapel will increase by tenfold.
He said: "It will provide a much better viewing experience while still minimising degradation of the work, especially since LEDs don't emit energy in the UV band."
