Anna Dixon, MP for Shipley, has been appointed as the new chair of Christians on the Left, succeeding government minister Jonathan Reynolds, who led the group for the past nine years.

Elected to Parliament in July, Dixon will now lead the group, which includes over 30 members in the Commons and Lords, with past members such as Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Founded in 1960, Christians on the Left promotes Christian socialism, supports Christians on the UK’s left-wing political spectrum, and encourages political engagement. The group has more than 2,400 members, including mayors and councillors across the UK.

Before becoming an MP, Dr Anna Dixon was the Chief Executive of the Centre for Ageing Better and chaired the Archbishop’s Commission on Reimagining Care. The Commission, led by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, aims to reshape care for the elderly and disabled, challenge outdated attitudes, and highlight successful models of care.

In her new role, Dixon said: “I am delighted and honoured to be taking up the role of Chair of Christians on the Left. I am grateful to Johnny Reynolds for the leadership he has given over the past 9 years.

“It is important we remain true to the traditions of Christian socialism and our values of social justice, loving our neighbour and tackling poverty. It is important to change with the times. I look forward to meeting members and working with the executive officers and director to shape a new strategy for Christians on the Left. With Labour in government for the first time in over 14 years, we have an opportunity to speak truth to power and have a direct influence."

She added: “We will continue to encourage people of faith to stand for office and support candidates through prayer and practical help. As an ecumenical organisation and a socialist society, we can draw more Christians into the Labour movement.”
