Russian 'warrior priest' killed in Ukraine given highest honour by Putin

by Sophie Drew

A 'warrior priest' killed in Ukraine has been given the highest award by Vladimir Putin.

Mikhail Vasilyev - a pro-kremlin archpriest - died over the weekend. The Orthodox Church says he was performing pastoral duties in Ukraine when he was hit by a missile strike.

A funeral has been held at the Moscow Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

Now, the Russian leader is awarding him the Hero of the Russian Federation medal.

As the war in Ukraine rages on, Putin has ordered Russian troops to withdraw from Kherson.

The pockets of Russian-claimed land has been shrinking as Ukraine continues to reclaim targeted areas.

However, Volodymyr Zelensky has publically called for Ukrainians to be "restrained", as he's sceptical about the Kremlin's plans.

A video showing a group of Ukrainian soldiers celebrating has been released online. The group of fighters said: "Today, on November 10, Snihurivka was liberated by the forces of the 131st Separate Intelligence Battalion. Glory to Ukraine!"

Moscow has occupied the region since March, but said  yesterday that they were retreating to protect the "life and health of Russian servicemen."
