RT Kendall warns: 'The Church is spiritually asleep' in wake-up call to UK Christians

by Sam Hailes

Veteran preacher and author RT Kendall has issued a stark warning to Christians in Britain, declaring that much of the Church is “spiritually asleep” and urgently in need of awakening.

In a deeply personal article marking his 90th birthday, the former Westminster Chapel minister reflected on his five decades of ministry in the UK and America, and used the opportunity to express both gratitude and grave concern.

“I speak as an exceedingly grateful man,” Kendall wrote in the latest issue of Premier Christianity magazine. “My debt to England and the Church there is incalculable… But I fear the Church is in possibly the worst shape it has been for a long time.”

The American theologian, who led Westminster Chapel in London for 25 years, accused some Christian leaders of abandoning the foundations of the Reformation and embracing ideas such as universalism, open theism and a diminished view of scripture. “Faith alone in Christ alone is what I would go to the stake for,” he wrote, stressing the importance of justification by faith.

Kendall also took aim at modern theological training, saying: “Although there are some sound Bible colleges in Britain, I rarely recommend seminary anymore.”

His critique centred on what he perceives to be a loss of biblical confidence. “Many have gradually and unwittingly accepted a flimsy view of scripture,” he said. “There is virtually no outrage today over what once offended us.”

Kendall urged British Christians to “stick to your guns” if they still believe in the Bible. “Don’t give up… I will pray for you that you might accept this word as a wake-up call from an American who respects you, looks up to you and loves you sincerely.” Read RT Kendall’s article in full at premierchristianity.com where you can also subscribe to the magazine.
