Royalist or Republican, Christians encouraged to join daily prayers for the Coronation

by Donna Birrell

Churches Together in England (CTE) are encouraging Christians from all traditions to join daily prayers for the King and the nation between Easter Day and May 6th.

A statement released by the Presidents of CTE who include the Archbishop of Canterbury Most Rev Justin Welby and the Archbishop of Westminster Most Rev Vincent Nichols, says the prayers will reflect the values of community, faith and service.

The Presidents, who also include Rev Canon Helen Cameron, the Free Churches Moderator, Archbishop Nikitas of the Orthodox Churches and Bishop Tedroy Powell, of the Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches, say the Coronation will be a time of great importance and joy for the nation.

CTE’s General Secretary Bishop Mike Royal told Premier it’s an opportunity for people across the country to come together :

“The Coronation of the King is an important moment for the nation, it will be a full weekend of celebration. So as a nation, there's just a feeling amongst the CTE presidents that we should come together in prayer.

“King Charles has made it very clear over a number of years, that he values faith. In its widest sense, he values the contribution that faith makes generally to society. But that includes the Christian faith. So the presidents of CTE really want to get behind those sentiments and pray for the King.

“The Queen's funeral showed just how much the nation comes together at these particular times, whether you're a royalist or a republican. These massive occasions in our country bring people together and make them think about faith. When you see king walking through Westminster Abbey, it's all around you.

“There will be a lot of pomp and ceremony, but it's a deeply spiritual time. The CTE Presidents represent the Orthodox tradition, the Pentecostal and Charismatic tradition, the Free Churches, the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church, so there is a real sense of unity, about bringing the nation together at this moment.”
