The Church of Scotland's next Moderator has told Premier Christian News that love, respect and compassion are at the heart of her ministry and could help transform society.

Rev Jill Clancy, a chaplain at HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, will become the first prison chaplain to serve as Moderator of the General Assembly when she takes up the role in May 2027.

The 56-year-old, who will be only the seventh woman to hold the position, says the prisoners she works with have strengthened her own faith.

Speaking to Premier, she described the men as "quite inspirational", despite the challenges of working in a prison environment.

Her theme for the year will focus on loving God, loving your neighbour and loving yourself.

"If we all loved each other and respected each other a lot more, then we wouldn't probably need prisons for a start, and the world would be in a much better place," she said.

Rev Clancy explained that she tries to treat prisoners with dignity, regardless of their offences, offering support and encouragement during difficult times.

Looking ahead to her new role, she expressed optimism about the Church of Scotland's future, despite declining congregations and significant changes.

"It's actually quite an exciting time for the church," she told Premier, pointing to growing membership and new forms of ministry.

She also encouraged Christians to pray that the Church would remain a strong witness in Scotland and beyond.

Her hope, she said, is that more people will turn towards God and discover His love.
