A priest in the US is being hailed a hero after coming to the rescue when a suspect tried to flee the scene after his vehicle crashed into another car.
Rev Canon Jean-Baptiste Commins, who is rector of St Joseph Shrine in Detroit, was in his cassock when he heard tyres screeching outside his church and saw a man running towards him.
After hearing someone shout “Stop him!” Fr Jean-Baptiste grabbed the man, who was allegedly driving a stolen car and said he had to “unfortunately give him a couple punches” to help restrain him until police arrived.
He told Fox News Detroit that as soon as the police arrived he “rushed back to the lady [in the struck vehicle] and made sure she didn’t need the anointing of the sick or blessing”, adding “I was there too with the medics; she was not very responsive, but her eyes were twitching a little bit.” The woman had sustained minor injuries.
It’s understood the incident happened after the 18 year old suspect sped up while officers were pursuing him and rammed into another vehicle.
Fr Jean-Baptiste said that it had been “Just another day in the D.”
