Christian leaders are calling for prayer after reports of a mass stabbing attack in Southport.

Young children are thought to be among eight stabbed at a property on Hart Street, Southport, at around 11.50am on Monday.

Armed police have arrested a man and seized a knife after being called out to the scene, and said there was no wider threat to the public.

A number of victims have been airlifted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, with the hospital declaring a "major incident" and telling non-urgent patients to stay away.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident "horrendous and deeply shocking", while Home Secretary expressed "deep concern" at the scenes.

As the situation continues to unfold, Christian leaders and politicians have been posting to social media with prayers and messages of support.

"Heavenly Father, we #pray for the families of #Southport for comfort hope strength amidst the horror of today's attack," London City Mission CEO Graham Miller wrote on X.

"We pray for emergency services dealing with the injured We pray for healing for the injured and comfort for loved ones #LordHaveMercy

Ian Byrne, MP for Liverpool West Derby, sent his "thoughts and prayers" to all those involved.

"Thank you to all at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for doing what you do best for our communities," he added.

Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza said she was "sending prayers and love to the families involved, and to the brilliant staff at @AlderHey".

She added: "I’ve seen for myself how hard they work for the children in their care - please spare a thought for them as they handle this tragedy."
