Popular Bible commentary series 'The Bible Speaks Today' finishes after 40 years

by Sam Hailes

Publisher IVP announced the BST series was 'finally complete!', commending the series for helping Christians "better understand the Bible and how it should impact their everyday lives".

The series now comprises commentaries on all 66 books of the Bible, plus 18 Bible Themes titles. Over 40 authors have contributed.

Series editor Alec Motyer told Premier it was "a great relief" to have finished publishing the titles.

"I'm happy to say we're ending on a remarkably high note. The last four volumes (Ralph Davis on Daniel, Chris Wright, Jeremiah and Lamentations and David Firth, Joshua] have been right at the top of the tree," he said.

The first title in the series, 'The Message of Galatians' written by renowned preacher and evangelist John Stott was first published in 1968. BST Themes series editor, Derek Tidball said he was hooked by Stott's commentary on Galatians and has "devoured every volume as they have been published since."

"BST has provided excellent models for expository preachers, combining clarity of communication with careful exegesis, theological literacy and wise application. But they have also been eminently devotional."

"It was a joy to celebrate the completion of the New Testament series in 2000, just as the BST Themes series was starting. It's a joy now to thank [series editor] Alec Motyer for all his work on the Old Testament series and salute its completion."

The BST series, one of the most successful published by IVP has found favour among churches and theological colleges throughout the world, with 'The Message of Romans' by John Stott selling well over 28,000 copies to date in the UK alone.
