Pope releases 'Mannequin Challenge' message to highlight refugee plight

The mannequin challenge is a popular internet trend in which participants appear frozen on screen.

In the video released by the Vatican, busy workers appear frozen on the street while ignoring a man begging on the side of the road.

"Great sections of the population are excluded and marginalised: without a job, without options, without a way out," the Pope says in a voiceover.

"Don't abandon them," Pope Francis urges.

The 'mannequin' actors then come to life and give the man help.

The Pope goes on to outline his prayer intentions for February including for the poor, refugees and marginalised to find comfort in their communities.

The Pope releases his prayer intentions at the start of every month and implores Catholics to join him in prayers for particular issues.
