Pope Francis has described the march of thousands of refugees into Europe as a "torrent of misery" and said that it tested religious faith.
He challenged Europeans to provide shelter for the thousands without homes.
More than a million migrants headed to Europe in 2015, and more than 3,600 people drowned in the Mediterranean sea trying to cross from north Africa, according to The Times.
During this crisis the pope said that it was easy to think that God was not there.
"Sometimes we ask ourselves how it is possible that human injustice persists unabated, and that the arrogance of the powerful continues to demean the weak, relegating them to the most squalid outskirts of our world."
He called for all Roman Catholic parishes to host refugee and migrant families and in September 2015 the Vatican housed a Syrian Christian family.
Following his New Year message he told crowds that he hoped 2016 would be "a little better" than 2015.
