Pope francis calls for lasting peace as gaza ceasefire starts

by Premier Journalist

Pope Francis has expressed cautious optimism for lasting peace in Gaza after the ceasefire agreement took effect on Sunday.

Speaking during his Sunday Angelus address, the Pope voiced his gratitude for the efforts of the mediators who helped bring about the ceasefire, emphasising the crucial role of mediation in fostering peace.

In his remarks, Pope Francis thanked all parties involved in securing the agreement, urging that the terms of the ceasefire be respected immediately. He also called for the safe return of hostages who have been held in Gaza since the war broke out in October 2023, as well as the reunification of families who have been torn apart by the conflict.

“I hope that all hostages can finally return home and embrace their loved ones again,” the Pope said.

The Pope extended his prayers to the families of Israeli hostages and expressed hope that humanitarian aid workers would soon be able to access the most vulnerable populations in Gaza, who have been suffering throughout the ongoing conflict. In his address, he highlighted the need for both Israelis and Palestinians to receive clear signs of hope, saying,:"Both Israelis and Palestinians need clear signs of hope."

The Pope also reiterated his longstanding support for a two-state solution, calling on political leaders in both Israel and Palestine, with the help of the international community, to work towards a just resolution.

"I hope that political authorities in both territories can reach a just solution for two states," he said.

Encouraging dialogue, reconciliation, and peace, Pope Francis called on all to unite in prayer: “Everyone can say yes to dialogue, yes to reconciliation, and yes to peace.” The Pope’s comments come as the ceasefire, which marks a significant de-escalation in the violence, enters its initial 42-day phase. The ongoing challenge will be for Israel and Hamas to reach a further agreement to ensure that the ceasefire holds and evolves into a long-term peace.
