Pope finds unlikely ally in footballer turned TV presenter Gary Lineker

by Marcus Jones

Pope Francis has been on the receiving end of some unlikely praise following a spirited speech on inequality around the world.

Speaking via video link to the World Meeting of Popular Movements last weekend the pontiff called on financial institutions, pharmaceutical companies, media and tech companies to play their part in building a fairer society.

Asking 'in the name of God' he asked different industries to take action in what some labelled his nine commandments.

His 38-minute speech has drawn widespread praise including that of footballer turned TV presenter Gary Lineker.

Writing to his eight million followers on Twitter, he quoted the Pope and said: "I'm not the slightest bit religious but this Pope is spot on and using his immense influence for good. In the name of humanity all of the below.

The Pope also insisted that he will continue to be  "a pest" for defending the poor and most vulnerable, despite attracting critics from within the Church.
