Pastor who says God punishes gays with floods loses everything in flood

by Hannah Tooley

Tony Perkins managed to escape with his family from the flooding which has swept across southern United States, killing at least 13 people.

Mr Perkins, 53, now says he is investigating God's message through the floods.

He said: "We're gonna look for what God's gonna do in this.

"I'm asking those questions and I'm going to see."

He said his family had to leave their house in a canoe before a former member of his church took them in.

He founded the Family Research Council, a group that says it is a 'leading voice' for family values, but it has been called a homophobic hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that more than 11,000 people have fled their homes so far and The Red Cross says it is the worst flooding since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Mr Perkins is well known for being outspoken and has in the past blamed the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 on "sexual liberalism," he also previously claimed past hurricanes were a sign of God's wrath for the legalisation of gay marriage.

He told the radio station around 80% of his fellow congregants have been affected by the floods.
