A priest from Ireland who was found guilty of sexually abusing a child in his care at a religious school in Santiago has avoided a prison sentence.
John O'Reilly moved to Chile from Ireland in 1985 and abused a young girl at a private school between 2007 and 2009.
But a judge decided against a jail term and instead sentenced him to four years and a day of "supervised liberty".
It means he will be free to travel outside of the country and will not be held at home. He will only be required to check in with a parole officer periodically.
He will be placed on the country's equivalent of the sex offenders register but it's much less that the 10 year sentence prosecutors had aimed for.
