Oxfordshire river blessed in Creationtide service

by Anna Rees Green

The river Windrush, running through Witney, Oxfordshire, will be blessed in a unique service to honour creation.

The Bishop of Dorchester will hold a service on the riverbank in Langel Common to mark Creationtide.

Creationtide is a season running from 1st September to 4th October in the Church of England, in which copngregants give thanks to God for the natural world in prayer and liturgy, and lament damage done to creation by human greed.

Rt Rev Gavin Collins will lead a procession from St Mary’s Church to the river, where a cross made of willow will be laid on its surface in “recognition of the value of water to all life”.

St Mary's warden, Kate Banks told the Witney Gazette: “Autumn has traditionally been a time of harvest festivals.

"With our food supplies threatened by climate change, many churches now observe 'Creationtide'.

"It is an opportunity to show our gratitude for what the Windrush has meant, and still means, to Witney and also to express our common desire for a river which is clear, healthy, and life-giving."

The service will be held on Sunday 6th October.
