A decision to allow an RE teacher to return to work despite being sacked for possessing indecent images of children is being reviewed by the Department for Education. Geoffrey Bettley, 36, was cautioned by police in West Yorkshire in 2011 after nearly 200 images were found on his computer.
Mr Bettley was employed as an RE teacher at St Mary's Catholic School in Menston, from September 2001 to December 2011. He accepted a police caution and was dismissed. But a panel's ruled he does not pose a risk to children because the photos he viewed weren't the most serious.
Peter Saunders from the National Association for People Abused in Childhood said he's outraged:
"People who are abused for the delight of people who buy these images, the devastation caused will potentially last a lifetime so to try and make excuses by saying these were somehow a lower level of offence is actually quite offensive to the victims."
