The survey by ComRes for ITV News showed that 39% of people asked thought the faith was working to help change the world for the better.
But it showed a huge difference in the opinions of the public depending on their age.
Just 22% of 18-24 year olds believe Christianity is a force for good in the world compared to over half (55%) of those aged 65+.
The percentage of people who think Christianity is good is higher than for religion overall, which only one in four people agree is a force for good.
Although around two in five Britons (44%) think that religious leaders in Britain should not get involved in political debates, half (50%) think it is right that religious leaders should speak out about economic inequality.
Two thirds think the Archbishops of Canterbury and York were right to speak out in recent weeks on the selfishness around Black Friday (65%) and when they described Britain as becoming dominated by "consumerism and selfishness."
