1 in 3 Scottish churches at risk: Scotland's Churches Trust steps in

by Lydia Davies

A major project has launched to protect Scotland’s historic churches and the treasures they hold, amid predictions that a third of these buildings could close by the end of this decade.

Led by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and Scotland’s Churches Trust, the Finding Futures for Scotland’s Churches initiative will gather vital information on the heritage and community role of nearly 3,000 churches still standing.

The project has been awarded £229,015 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Dr Helen Spencer from the Society of Antiquaries said the grant would support “crucial” work.

She said: “Working with Scotland's Churches Trust and the many other groups involved in caring for these places of worship, we hope to make the heritage sector much better prepared when churches are closed or repurposed, to ensure that important treasures are not lost to the nation forever.”

Some communities are already exploring local solutions. In Kincraig, residents are setting up a charity to buy Loch Insh Old Kirk, which has roots going back to the 6th Century.

They hope to continue Christian worship alongside concerts and exhibitions.

The Church of Scotland says falling membership, fewer ministers and financial pressures mean more closures are inevitable.

A spokesperson explained: “We recognise that Insh Church, as with many other church buildings across the country, is important and valuable to the local community.

"However, our mission plans take into consideration what is best for the whole of the Presbytery area, making the best use of our resources, both human and financial, and ensuring they are best placed to continuing our mission of sharing the good news of Jesus and serving our communities.”

Similar community bids are underway in Inverness for the city’s Old High Church, as people seek new ways to honour and sustain Scotland’s church heritage for future generations.
